PERSONALITY

Ildikó is an Anti-Nihilist, which might seem somewhat ironic in a mercenary. She agrees that the world might be cruel, unfair and uncaring but believes that itdoesn't have to stay that way. She doesn't cling to pain or try to make a big deal out of anything...which is not the same as saying she's not ready to shove some justice up some jerks ass. She knows how cynical existence is and she's having none of it.

Ildikó does not believe in fate because if things are set in stone, that means she is meant to do what she already wants to do, therefore destiny doesn't matter anyway. The world only makes sense if you give meaning to it and the meaning of life is what you chose it to be.

She takes care of her team, considers them family, and in return they have undying loyalty to her. She's had her ups and downs with other mercenary teams but they still respect her and know better than to go for the weakest member of her party -Cerissa, who is more of a lockpicker than a fighter- only because Ildikó might take it personally.

Her favorite fighting form is combat pragmatism. She will use every scrap of advantage available in a fight and has taught the rest of the Atheris to do the same. You shouldn't care more about honor than reason. She's not reluctant to do the dirty fighting and takes jobs she considers interesting but will avoid injuring children at any cost, no matter the species.

She's prone to joke and snark in equal amounts, enjoys flirting and spends the same amount of time picking out her weapons as she spends choosing what makeup she's going to put on. Ildikó is very competitive and can be convinced to do really dumb things if her pride is stung. She's also somewhat sadistic while fighting, enjoys a good brawl and has an affinity for dangerous weapons.

Free will is an extremely important concept to her. She hates all forms of classism and rejects the idea that lower classes are expendable. And oh, will she make it crystal clear when she's displeased by a particularly bigoted attitude. Because she never had a formal education and is more street smart than anything else, Ildikó has a very low opinion of her own intelligence and a slight inferiority complex.

She's had a few bad encounters with fairies but the only magical creatures she can't stand are centaurs. It's not because she has an issue with them as a species. One of Ildikó's ex-girlfriends was a really controlling centaur and now her opinion about 'taurs, in general, is akin to 'arseholes to the lot of 'em'.

Hot-headed as she might be at times, Ildikó in charge of the Atheris because she uses common sense to make decisions rather than let herself be driven by her emotions. She is a professional and when the situation is die, knows that taking things personally won't help, whereas stopping to think about what the best course of action is might. When she's displeased by someone's actions, for example with slavers, she won't hold back out of honor or the sense of justice, she will kill her enemies stone dead so that they won't hurt anyone else.

WORLD & HISTORY

World

The world where the continent of Carmadine is located is a fantasy setting similar to the European Middle Ages. It mixes traits from other classical periods and different cultures as well, such as Medieval China, Ancient Egypt and Medieval India. Slavery had been happening for centuries and, while it depended on the ethnic group, more often than not slaves were wholly at the mercy of their owners with little protection from society. Some slaves are personal servants of individuals, while others belong to the estates of temples and noblemen and are taken during during military campaigns if not bestowed by the king.

Magic is a common thing, so are gods, spirits and all sorts of mythological creatures. The current magic in the continent is residual. At the beginning of time, the Gods tried to share their existence with humanity and the barrier that separated the Gods' realm and the human world was broken. It caused many troubles to humans, and the Gods, not wanting their creations to suffer, withdrew to their own world. The brief contact, however, changed the human world drastically and many new races and creatures appeared, most of them influenced by the magic of the Gods: vampires related to the Gods of the Death, trolls and werewolves related to Earth Gods, dinosaurs and other giant animals that people use as pets or rides...

Not all the magic was the same because it came from very different Gods, and thus it affected humans in different ways. Some humans were born with a noticeable level of magic in them while others learned to train their powers and make them grow. Magic became inherent and could be transferred through spells, but not without risk; These spells could kill the user if done the wrong way. Technology is not very common in the South half of the continent, but the North has steam-driven machines. Northerners have managed to develop certain advanced technology, while the Southern technological fields stagnated, especially those related to communication.

History

Ildikó's story starts with a winter spirit named Frost. He was centuries old already but still at the dawn of his life if compared to ancient personifications of seasons like Old Man Winter. One night he found a couple in his domain, the woman carrying a bundle, seemingly lost. Feeling sorry for them, Frost cleared the fog and calmed the winds so they could leave the forest unharmed. Before running away, the pair left the bundle on the snow behind them, discarded on purpose. When the curious spirit checked it, he found a newborn baby girl wrapped in a thin cloth. She had been born with a pair of extra arms, something unusual even in a land that was always vibrating with residual magic.

Enraged at the parents for abandoning their child, Frost sent a snowstorm after them and took the girl with him, for winter is unforgiving but not cruel. He could not keep the baby, as all he was able to give her were cold touches, so he headed to the nearest approximation of civilization: The Cailleach inn.

The owner of the inn, Sahlyeh, had turned the place into a safe heaven. It was a neutral meeting place where Banshees, trolls, bogeymen, golems and all sorta of unusual creatures shared their tables and drinks with knights, elves, mages and witches.

Vanninshire was a notoriously poor and crime-ridden land but humans and fairies alike could always get a cold drink and a soft bed in the inn. Those who wanted to cause trouble found themselves facing Sahlyeh, known for her short patience for nonsense and fast reflexes with a knife. Given the inn's name, some suspected that the woman could be part of the supernatural as well, though she never denied nor confirmed it.

Frost left the baby near the inn, knowing that the bogeyman that worked there, Marty, would sense her fear and come looking. His theory proved correct and Marty brought the baby to Sahlyeh, who ended up adopting her formally after they looked for their parents for a few weeks without luck. Ildikó was raised by the patrons of the inn as much as her adoptive mother, earning a varied set of skills due to the unusual nature of her tutors. Frost went out of his way to keep Ildikó safe as she grew up, even checking on her during spring, long after his season had ended. That put him at odds with other season spirits who saw it as an attack on their territory and caused more than one violent clash between the fairies.

Ildikó noticed the weather behaving oddly around her from time to time but never made the connection with the season spirits the same way Sahlyeh did. The innkeeper managed to corner the winter spirit and demanded to know why he was always around her daughter. Frost eventually confessed what happened the night he found Ildikó and both decided that it would be better for her if she never knew what her parents tried to do. After that, Sahlyeh didn’t object so strongly to Frost’s presence and even allowed him inside the inn, where no other season spirits dared to enter. From them on, Ildikó and the winter spirit developed a growing friendship, with him acting as an older brother to her.

When Ildikó was six years old, a rare disease spread through the shire and people blamed the local zombies for it. Her mother Sahlyeh kept them safe in her inn, refused to let the irrational mob burn the zombies and stood her ground until things calmed down. 3 years later, the inn caught on fire after being struck by lightning during a storm. The zombies were the first ones to help evacuate it even though they were terrified of fire, and later rebuilt it in record time. That pretty much set Ildiko's views on life, that family and existence are what you make of it.

She grew up getting herself in trouble with the local authorities more often than not, aided by Frost on many occasions, until the day she decided to leave Vanninshire. Ildikó had a natural talent for fighting and became a mercenary, starting an all female (with one exception, Kale) team known as The Atheris.
